Hello! Welcome to Reignite Health, Bokz the Bio here ready and happy to educate you more on health so you can reignite your health.
Today’s topic will briefly state what neurodegenerative diseases are and how do Biokineticists help people with Neurodegenerative diseases improve their physical health and quality of life.
So, what are neurodegenerative diseases?
Neurodegenerative diseases are a range of diseases that are characterised by the death of nerve cells in the brain, spinal cord and/or peripheral system. Their cause is known to be multifactorial meaning it can be influenced by more than one thing such as genetics, environmental factors, and other viruses or illness, and age and gender. According to WHO, diseases that affect the nervous system account for more than 3 billion cases worldwide and is known as the main cause for illness and disability.
The most common types of neurodegenerative diseases?
- Parkinson’s Disease (PD)
- Disease that causes unintentional bodily movements know as tremors, shuffling when walking, balance and coordination challenges. It generally happens when you are older and is affected by genetic and environmental factors. It is characterised by the death of the neurotransmitter called dopamine
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
- Also known as motor neuron disease. It results in the death of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Death of these cells results in no communication between brain and body. It is mainly genetic.
- Alzheimer’s Disease (AD)
- The accumulation of amyloid and tau protein plaque in the brain. This accumulation affects the functioning of the hippocampal system which is responsible for making long term memories.
- Huntington’s Disease (HD)
- Inherited disease that is characterised by the death of nerve cells that are responsible for performing voluntary movements. This leads to uncontrolled and unintentional body movements and postural challenges.
Common/possible symptoms a person with a neurodegenerative disease may have?
People with neurodegenerative disease have a slow decline of function as the nerve cells die. The most common symptoms are:
- Movement and coordination difficulties
- Cognitive difficulties
- Balance and postural difficulties
- Changes in emotional wellbeing – anxiety, depression, agitation
- Forgetfulness and memory loss
How to manage/improve the quality of life of a person with a neurodegenerative disease?
Persons with neurodegenerative disease can live an improved quality of life based on how they manage and treat the symptoms they experience. Some tools involve:
- Improving their eating habits. Having food that is less inflammatory, supports gut health and fuels the brain may help better brain functioning and clarity
- Getting adequate sleep each night allowing for recovery of the body and brain
- Incorporating physical activity into their day can help improve coordination, concentration, strength, and energy levels
- Incorporating certain tools to cope with highly stressful environments or improving working conditions may assist with productivity and concentration
- Building a strong support system that understands the persons intricate needs provides a sense of worth and belonging
How can a Biokineticist help?
Biokineticists provide a safe and inclusive space for people with neurodegenerative diseases to exercise and improve their quality of life. The focus is to facilitate movement to improve flexibility, strength, and mobility. Biokineticists are trained to know how the nervous system and body work together and the role of neuroplasticity in enhancing brain-body connections. All sessions are person specific giving a sense of belonging and importance to the person.
